Benedict XVI He spoke about Pier Giorgio several times with young people, and cited him among the saints devoted to the Eucharist in his apostolic exhortation Sacrament of charity, at n. 94, proposing him as an example to the Christian people in the company of seventeen other great saints and blesseds from antiquity to the present day.
The first speech in which Pope Benedict XVI remembered the figure of Pier Giorgio was on the occasion of theGeneral Audience of July 5, 2006
"Yesterday we celebrated the liturgical memorial of Blessed Piergiorgio Frassati. May his example of faithfulness to Christ inspire in you, dear young people, resolutions of courageous evangelical witness"
The following year I remember Pier Giorgio at theGeneral Audience 4 July 2007
«Today we celebrate the liturgical memorial of Blessed Piergiorgio Frassati. May his example strengthen you, dear young people, in bearing witness to the Gospel in every circumstance of life; may it help you, dear sick people, to offer your daily sufferings, so that the civilization of love may be realized in the world; and may it support you, dear newlyweds, in building your family on the solid foundation of intimate union with God.
In the end, however, the question may remain in our hearts as to whether it is truly possible to live in joy even amidst the many trials of life, especially the most painful and mysterious, whether truly following the Lord, trusting in Him always gives happiness."
General Audience 8 July 2009
«Dear young people, I know that many of you are taking advantage of the summer to live a significant experience of spirituality and service: I encourage you in this and I point out to you the example of one of your peers, Blessed Piergiorgio Frassati».
XXV World Youth Day, 22 February 2010
«Keeping his gaze fixed on eternal life, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, who died in 1925 at the age of 24, said: “I want to live and not just get by!” and on a photo of a climb, sent to a friend, he wrote: “Towards the top”, alluding to Christian perfection, but also to eternal life.
Dear young people, I urge you not to forget this perspective in your life plan: we are called to eternity. God created us to be with Him, forever. It will help you to give full meaning to your choices and to give quality to your existence."
Meeting with the children and young people of Italian Catholic Action (30 October 2010)
«Moreover, in Catholic Action, you have many examples of genuine, beautiful, true love: Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, Blessed Alberto Marvelli; love that even reaches the sacrifice of life, like Blessed Pierina Morosini and Blessed Antonia Mesina».
Meeting with young people from the diocese of San Marino-Montefeltro (Pennabilli, 19 June 2011)
"Do not give in to individualistic and selfish logic! May the testimony of so many young people who have reached the goal of sainthood comfort you: think of Saint Teresa of the Child Jesus, Saint Dominic Savio, Saint Maria Goretti, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, Blessed Alberto Marvelli – who is from this earth! – and so many others, unknown to us, but who lived their time in the light and strength of the Gospel, and found the answer: how to live, what must I do to live".
XXVII World Youth Day, 15 March 2012
«The answer can come from some experiences of young people like you who have found in Christ the light capable of giving strength and hope, even in the midst of the most difficult situations. Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati (1901-1925) experienced many trials in his brief existence, including one, concerning his love life, which had hurt him deeply. Precisely in this situation, he wrote to his sister: «You ask me if I am cheerful; and how could I not be? As long as Faith gives me strength, I will always be cheerful! Every Catholic cannot help but be cheerful... The purpose for which we were created shows us the path strewn with many thorns, but not a sad path: it is joy even through pain» (Letter to his sister Luciana, Turin, 14 February 1925). And Blessed John Paul II, presenting him as a model, said of him: "he was a young man of overwhelming joy, a joy that overcame many difficulties in his life" (Address to young people, Turin, 13 April 1980).
